Check a rate you've been offered
Bureaux de change, airports and card providers usually give you less than the real rate and keep the difference. Type in the rate you're offered for £1 (sometimes labelled “we sell” or “you get”) to see what it costs on £500.00.

Some providers also charge a separate fee on top of the rate. Add that to the hidden cost to see the full price. If a card machine abroad offers to charge you in pounds, it uses its own rate, and you can check that here too.
Real rate = the European Central Bank's euro reference rate, published Monday 12 October, worked out against the pound (and, for currencies fixed to the dollar, euro or rupee, from that fixed rate). It's the mid-market rate, with no fee added, updated once each working day at about 3pm UK time. It is a reference for comparison, not a rate you can buy at.
